Butterflies aren't known for their fierce defenses. But in jiu jitsu, one of the most versatile open guard positions is the butterfly guard (a guarda borboleta). Because we have been going over this position in class at Devine Jiu Jitsu Charleston for the past two weeks--especially for the purposes of setting up sweeps--I thought it would be helpful for me and some of my less experienced training partners if I scrubbed the interwebs for some helpful videos. As usual, Youtube delivered. So, below you will find some details and variations from Marcelo Garcia, Robson Moura, Andre Galvao, Saulo Ribeiro, Caio Terra, and Rodrigo Gracie. There is also a video by Stephan Kesting on three common errors people make when using the butterfly guard. Finally, I included some videos that show how to escape or pass the butterfly guard (by Pedro Sauer, Robson Moura, and Eduaord0 Nascimento). This should be enough to get you started when it comes to some of the general details and advantages of the position. So, watch, learn, and go train!
The videos are below the fold!
